| "The Carmody Open
has been marvelous in providing scholarship support
for fatherless boys and keeping the memories of Kevin
Carmody alive," says Danny Costello '72, Gonzaga's
Vice President of Advancement. "That the Carmody
Open Committee has decided to help perpetuate the
memories of two wonderful
young men such as Christian and Patrick truly speaks
to what Gonzaga is about. Gonzaga doesn't forget."
Kevin
Carmody ’62, at Gonzaga, was a class officer,
co-captain of the football team and an all-Metropolitan
selection at center. At Boston College he was a class
officer and was pledge master of his fraternity. Following
his graduation from Catholic University Law School and
a year as law clerk for Chief United States District
Court Judge Edward M. Curran, he joined the office of
the United States District Attorney. Upon leaving the
District Attorney’s office, he joined the law
firm founded by his father, Whiteford, Hart, Carmody
and Wilson. He was very active in the Gonzaga Alumni
Association and, during his two-year term as President,
he inaugurated several traditions, most notably the
Gonzaga Athletic Hall of Fame.
His spirit and enthusiasm are with us today and in
a real sense it can be said that once again he has gotten
us to come together to enjoy ourselves while pursuing
a common goal—obtaining funds for the education
of Gonzaga students who lost their father. Click

Christian Myler '95 In
his years at Gonzaga, he played on the football, soccer
and wrestling teams, and was
active in the Support Builds Strength group. Members
of his family had attended Gonzaga as far back as 1826.
While in high school, Christian also worked on the
Spirit of Washington cruise line, earning his captain's
license before joining the Marines. He was a sergeant
in the United States Marine Corps, who served in the
war in Iraq before being killed in a motorcycle accident
in September 2003. He had served in Iraq in the 24th
Marine Expeditionary Unit based out of Camp LeJeune
before being assigned to the elite Special Operations
Group at Camp Pendleton, California.
His family began
a scholarship in his memory after his death, with
the hopes that the funds raised would supprt a Gonzaga
education for the son of an active-duty member of the
Marine Corps / military. The Christian Spirit
cruise was established to help fund the scholarship.
In addition to attending the Carmody Open, please
consider also joining Christian's friends,
family and classmates for this year's cruise on Sunday,
October 5, 2008.
Patrick McCarthy '94 While at Gonzaga,
Pat was known for his tremendous work ethic within
the classroom and on the football field. His efforts
were
widely recognized by his classmates, teammates, faculty
and coaches. Pat was honored with the prestigious
Barnes Award for the student that always performed
to his highest level while living in the spirit of
the Jesuit Tradition as a "Man for Others".
Pat
always gave 100% at whatever he tried. Pat is remembered
today
at Gonzaga with a scholarship in his name that can
enable young men, who would not otherwise have the
opportunity, to experience the Gonzaga community and
achieve a Gonzaga education. |
